The central character is not a member of the nuclear Tuck family - Pa Angus (Michael Park), Ma Mae (Carolee Carmello), wound-tight Miles (Robert Lenzi) and needy Jesse (Andrew Keenan-Bolger) - but a young girl, Winnie Foster (Sarah Charles Lewis), who happens upon Jesse and the spring after running out of her home in a pique and must decide whether to imbibe. Claudia Shear and Tim Federle's book, it seems from this production, would rather take us into the woods and then mostly keep us there, for our own good. This version of "Tuck Everlasting" seems to want to keep us moving in safe, concentric circles. And even if the Tucks essentially have the same problem as most vampires - ostracized, outliving many of those they loved, unable to see their own children fully grow up, weary of life eternal - they sport neither fangs nor a taste for blood. Granted, "Tuck Everlasting" is not the work of Roald Dahl. But it removes much of the tension from a story filled with agonizing decision-making and enough talk of life and death to keep anyone awake at night. ![]() Even much of the acting is plumby and fantastical.įor a competent Broadway show aiming to capture the family market, such a safe approach is hardly unreasonable and, for sure, likely will avoid offending the legions of fans of the source material. And the choreography, by director Casey Nicholaw, is balletic, pretty, interested in the social dance forms of the 19th century and fundamentally circular, sending the ensemble members swirling through the years. The score, by Chris Miller, has echoes of "Finian's Rainbow" and "Brigadoon" and often showcases the sound of flute or penny whistle. Walt Spangler's setting is dominated by curls and squiggles. NEW YORK - The new Broadway musical version of "Tuck Everlasting" - a young person's novel by Natalie Babbitt that has justly been loved by at least three generations of kids, including mine - is determined to tell the story of those who drink from the waters of eternal life in the language of whimsy.
